What led me here p/2

I let the idea of starting a non-profit spin in my brain for a while, and then I slept and ate and did my daily stuff, and repeated a couple of times. After that, it all seemed silly. Why would I want to start a third career? Why would I want to turn my life upside-down. Why would I want to get my butt out of bed and spend a LOT of time and work and energy doing something, when I can just coast and be fine. This is dumb.

And then, I talked to my brother. “I had this dumb idea, that I want to start a nonprofit for giving books away. But it seems like so much work, and I’m old, and why would I bother.”

Brother says, “Donna.” I reply, “What.”

He says, “Donna!” I say, “What?”

“Donna!!!”

“What!!!”

“Don’t you remember Mike?”

“Apparently not.”

Brother: “Don’t you remember, after you were here in Tucson, and got those books, it got me all interested in books. So I started looking on Craigslist.” (Yes, “don’t get us bored because the Universe is at risk” runs in the family.) “I saw a guy post 20,000 books for free. I thought it was a scam, so I was like, “What’s the deal, dude!” But it was real. He ran a book non-profit here, and he was in over his head. DON’T YOU REMEMBER???”

Me: “Apparently not.”

Brother: “I helped him run it, and we built it up so big! We gave books to all of the schools, and pre-schools, and jails, and hospitals, and shelters. We took books from failed Amazon distributors, libraries, and just people. I had people calling me up every 3 months to clear their garages out. I had retired teachers giving us 30 years of teaching materials. I did a 4 day garage sale, sold 30,000 books, and increased our operating budget by $11,000!”

Me: … … … … “Oh. I didn’t remember that.”

Brother: “You can remember where you put a paint scraper, 7 years ago, in the middle of a garage that contains approximately 1,297,623 other items. But you don’t remember this?”

Me: “Apparently so. Have you not met my brain?”

Brother: “Well, introduce your brain to your new third career, because it’s what you need to be doing.”
