I jumped in. I got the California paperwork filed, and processed. I talked to a lawyer, and made sure that I was on the right track for everything. I found a group of people to be on my Board. I wrote the bylaws, and the conflict of interest document, and all the little things. I set up the spreadsheets, and started the website. Had the Board meeting, did the minutes.
Sounds pretty boring. It was. It feels like this post is not going to be full of sparkles and unicorns, because that part was not exciting. It was tiring and brain numbing.
I had to learn WordPress, so I could do the website. I had to learn to use a graphics program, so I could do business cards. I had to learn terminology, and legal requirements, so that I could set up the paperwork and foundation of everything, exactly the way it was supposed to be set up.
It felt like I wasn’t making any goal-directed progress. But, then I remembered what my goal is. What my 5 year plan is. To be able to support other people. To be the fiscal sponsor for other people who want be small, focused, niche charities, and not deal with the hassle of it all. My goal is to deal with all of that learning curve, so that everyone else doesn’t.
My goal, is to set up, so that someone who wants to put out little free libraries, can come to me, and give me a business plan, and I can give them money. And they don’t have to deal with bylaws and bank accounts and board members. All of that will be transparent, and the person who wants to get books to seniors, can just come to me and get money for boxes and bookshelves.
So, no glitter. No unicorns. Just…quiet learning and setup. Getting the ducks in a pond, so that I can get them in a row next month.
